Austin The end of BBB?

May 25, 2013 8:36 PM (11+ Years)
Thought I would update this, a rather large surge of Texans responded to the Travis county commissioners via phone, petition, and office visits and park areas accessible by boat have been promised to stay open. This is the area used during the BBB as well as splash day and other heavy use weekends. I was out at the lake today and it is still very low, but it the lower basin of the lake is still better than 100' deep. Anyone else ready for the BBB?

Very very possible you will see Dp parties back in Austin in the future. We have added Dallas back into the lineup, working with our good friends in San Antonio to host a event there in 2013 and hoping to do the same in Austin as well.

We like the lake portion of BBB but the pre and post party tend to suck. They could really use some Some lessons from the DP planners. We now just go for the lake day and the head over to playersATX for our own after party. We miss the DP crew in Austin

The three hosts of the past Dp BBB party barges are kicking around what we are going to do for BBB this year. We have been contemplating hosting our own event either at Travis or another lake and just focus on our crowd. Like I explained last year and the feelings remain. Tired of all of the drama that we have gone through with BBB for the three years we hosted a party barge at the event. We believe in quality over quantity and doing our own thing is very appealing. So we are in discussions right now to see what is possible. I am in favor of doing a lake around the Houston area. Keeping it simple with bringing out a party barge with a Dj on it and taking X amount of guests out who do  not own a boat. Then let others tie up around us and spend the day listening to great music, socializing etc... As for a time frame that is still in discussion as I do not want to disrespect BBB by overlapping their date. So probably a bit earlier in the summer if possible. As we also need to focus on Purgatory time frame as well.

To keep the event more affordable for everyone in this tough economy.Boats allowed back in to Hippie HollowBuoys were moved citing safety concernsUpdated: Wednesday, 27 Feb 2013, 9:42 PM CST... Published : Wednesday, 27 Feb 2013, 9:38 PM CSTCalily Bien AUSTIN (KXAN) - Travis County parks officials have decided to put their decision in reverse regarding the ban on boats in the eastern cove of the clothing optional Hippie Hollow Park on Lake Travis. At a community meeting on Wednesday night, park officials admitted they made a mistake and agreed to reestablish boater access along the shoreline."We had not approached it in the proper way and we came to a compromise," said Dan Chapman, Chief Park Ranger with Travis County. Earlier this month , the Travis County Parks Department decided to move the buoy line back for safety reasons and to create a larger swimming space for park users. In the past two decades, the number of boats and size of boats entering the cove has increased, creating an unsafe situation for swimmers, the parks department says.Park officials said it'll be a couple of weeks before the buoys are moved back to the original location.Hippie Hollow park has a daily use entrance fee of $12 per car. Pedestrians or bicyclist can enter the park for $5. The cost for seniors and Veterans is $2.

LAKE TRAVIS , The posts say "swim at your own risk" but the controversy at Hippie Hollow isn't over the signs, its over the lines.Beginning in early February, the eastern cove is no longer open to boats. Some boaters were confused by the changes since there was no warning. We came out on a Sunday, and by Thursday, the swim buoys had been extended across the entire park, said avid boater and regular Hippie Hollow visitor Will Coombes. The eastern cove of Hippie Hollow had been open to boaters for decades, but now its impossible to anchor in the same place that we have been for at least the last 30 years said Coombes. The Travis County Parks Department told KVUE it expanded the swim-only zone for two reasons: to limit underage park access since visitors must be 18 and older, and to make the cove a safer place for swimmers. However, a Parks Department spokesperson acknowledged there is no record of any recent accidents. We couldn't figure out why this had happened, Coombes said. He believes that by banning boats from the cove, Travis County has created a bigger problem.Without being able to tie a shore line, you run the risk of swinging in winds in a boating lane in the middle of a channel."Now Coombes and hundreds of other boaters have started a petition online to restore their rights. We're hopeful that Travis County Parks will listen to our concerns and actually work with the community that utilizes the park."Travis County has scheduled a public meeting on the issue on Wednesday, February 27 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Travis County West Service Center located at 4501 Highway 620 North. We are making phone calls to county commissioners and hope they reverse the changes.
