Here is what we learned. The resort is not ready as there is work going on in different facets. The jacuzzi suites are not working properly as they had leaks in their suite and you had to call mainenance to get hot water turned on for the jacuzzi and the cold water could not be used at the same time. Construction sounds were eveyrwhere and relaxation was hard. The noon meals were lacking and consisted of basically just fast food items as the grill was not offered as it had been in the past. They were complimentary on the new restaurants and said the food was good at night. They also did not care for the alcohol served as it seemed very water downed. On top of that the group that was in house was not in the nature of the DP group so that did not help to distract them from the resort problems. So I am glad that I did not take our group to the resort and we are heading to Hedo III instead. Hopefully given another month the resort will be back in top running order and all problems will the fixed. As the staff knows what it takes to return to a top resort in the Caribbean. They just need more time as many resorts in Cancun have not opened yet. So with that said as I know that Sivina from Desire reads our forum. Please get ready for our partying group in August as we will be ready to rock Desire as the resort is our home away from home. | Just got a call from a couple that had just gotten off the plane from Desire Resort. The synopsis of the conversation was, "We should have listened to you". They are good friends of ours and had been to Desire before.
Now the truly good news is that they are expanding the passion suites from 4 to 8. Plus they now have a three specialty restaurants besides the other two. Oh and a piano bar on the second floor besides the disco. So Desire has really made the best of it and improved their resort. Now if the Hurricanes can just skip the resorts for the next few years so that everyone can enjoy them. lol | The new grand re-opening date for Desire is March 1st. With our group trip being for March 13th we are a little leary of having a group trip so close to the re-opening dates for several reasons. The main reason being that they could push back the March 1st date due to delays and or we get to the resort and it will not be truly finished and construction will still be ongoing everywhere.
Well it is even worse than that as they came back today and they are not taking any new bookings for dates before March 15th. They will have a new date on November 24th. So we are now working a new location for our group trip in March. We have a definite possibility and will have it firmed up tomorrow. It is as good if not better than Desire so no one will be disappointed. Stay tuned. |
We talked to a guy who owns a offshore fishing business in Playa. He said he talked to his partner who was in Playa for the storm and was basically told that everything was destroyed. No word out of Desire Resort yet as their forum has been down for two days now. But from the pictures coming out of Cancun one can only imagine what a 10-15ft storm surge did to that place. Really sad as when we were there last week the resort had just been put back in top shape and the staff was very happy. We had a ocean front room and there is no way anything in there survived that kind of storm surge. |
From the pics and description they are giving of the area. It looks like the Cancun area will be a disaster area from sometime. No word on Desire Resort yet but they say that Playa de Carmen is pretty much destroyed and Desire is between Playa and Cancun. Hard to believe that we were just there last week. |
http://stormcarib.com/reports/2005/mexico.shtml | Hopefully after Wilma leaves the Caribbean there will be a Desire Resort left. Click on this link as there are some people who stayed in Cancun and are keeping a rolling post of storm events. Last post I read was that the storm surge was 10 feet and cars were already floating in the streets. There are some pretty scary pictures also of what those people are facing and the storm is not even fully there yet.
